SCL Dogs
This blog is solely for my SCL (Second Chance League) dogs. SCL is a sled dog rescue organization located in Fairbanks, Alaska. Through them I was lucky enough to adopt Loki, Sage (Eb) and Ivy earlier this year. These dogs have turned out to be super dogs, who are great fun to run and train. They have great personalities and are really growing. Here's the chronicle of their sled dog lives for anyone who wants to keep up with them. Enjoy!
Loki was the first of these three to come along on the scene. He is by far, the most challenging dog I have ever worked with. Mostly in a good way though! He was so shy and skittish and scared of everything when he first got here in March. But he's been coming around and is now not so scared of me, he absolutely LOVES all the other dogs, and running in harness is what this dog lives for. Those are the times I can get close to him and we really seem to bond. He's a cool dog.

He's a wiry, yet muscular little guy who runs with a beautiful gait. It looks so fluid and he's so light on his feet.
This is Loki's first time in lead!! I did a lot of bikejoring with these guys this summer and Loki in particular really displayed his hard driving, no nonsense attitude. In fact, he was the "serious" dog one day when his partner, Octane, was flitting about and darting off into the trees to chase squirrels. Loki amazed me as he yanked Octane back on the trail and kept him going.

He only lasted about 10 minutes with 6 dogs behind him though. He did great at first, but then turned around and realized... "Holy Crap!! There's dogs behind me!!!" He started to get a bit nervous, so I immediately switched him back into swing position. We'll try it again this winter with a small team. He has a lot of promise.

Ivy and Sage are obviously brother/sister. They were described by the SCL folks as "fun, happy" dogs and they couldn't be more right!! They are so happy and loving, running them and playing with them is pure fun! They hadn't been in harness much before I got them, but took to it like seasoned pros.

They run together really well. Sage prefers the right-hand side, whereas Ivy likes the left.

Sage is the crazy man at hookup. Every team seems to have one dog that is just ALWAYS decibels above the rest. Most recently he has started vibrating with excitement just before we go. He pulls really well, and will run with anyone (dog) beside him.

Ivy is Ms. Super-Calm at hookup. You wonder if she really wants to go.... until you take a 2 second break on the trail! She becomes the team cheerleader and has this (slightly annoying if it wasn't so cute) high-pitched bark that will grate on most people's nerves. We are not stopped for mere seconds before she starts lunging and yipping to go.

This blog is for anyone who wants to follow the lives of three former SCL (Second Change League) dogs and their progress as we venture through life together.
Stacie... thanks for posting this. We are training a friend's 2nd Chance dog and she is great too. What fun to be able to have these dogs in our life.
